On Patriots Day, the New England Patriots revealed their new set. They dropped both former home and away unis, moved their color rush to their primary home and made a new jersey as an away version of said color rush uni. This is a big upgrade from what they have been wearing for the last 20 years, but man I'm disappointed.
Half of the disappointment is my own fault. I'll own that. I was hopelessly wishing for the over the shoulder logos of the '90s. I knew it was a long shot but I really wish they had gone in that direction. The other half of the disappointment is the fact that it is just their color rush uni that they took on full-time. I know it was mentioned as a "minor change", but I didn't think this would be the change.
I don't dislike these unis, they are okay. The jerseys and pants match so far better than the former. But it doesn't exactly match and it drives me bonkers lol. On the home jersey, they have 3 stripes on the shoulder. Red/White/Red. All the exact same size. On the pants, there are 3 stripes. Red/White/Red. However, the two red stripes are thin, while the white is much larger. Why? Why not have the pant stripes match the shoulders?

Then you have the new away jerseys. But they use the same pants from the home set. So the shoulder stripes are Red/Blue/Red and the pant stripes are still Red/White/Red. They don't match. Why did they not make white pants to match? Then you have the issue with the silver. The only silver they have is on the helmet and a small outline on the numbers between the white number and the outer red outline. So then I ask, why not change the helmets white? Or why not of done something completely different? Individually, I love each piece. The jerseys are fine. The pants are good. The helmet is good. But together it's like that puzzle piece that seems like it fits but it just won't sit in there right.
I feel like they could have gone in so many different directions, even in the "minor change" category. As crazy as it may sound, I think they could have looked great with no stripes at all. Just plain blue and white jersey's with the same number style. just remove the stripes. Add numbers on the shoulders. Make the pants all blue and all white with the Patriots logo on each hip, matching the logo on each arm. It would give you the option to mix and match jerseys and pants without clashing designs. It would be very simple, but I like simple. Here is a very rough photoshop edit of my idea.

It may not sound like it, but I disliked the former uniforms so much that I honestly do like these better. I just feel like this was such a missed opportunity for them. I don't think this was the answer they needed to get the loyal Patriots fans excited about the future. Per rules, they need to keep these for at least the next 5 years. And seeing as how bad their former unis were and they kept those for 20 years, I don't see them moving away from these for a long time.
I just want to give the new away unis a little more of the spotlight. Looking at just the helmet and jersey together, it is a decent look. I don't hate it. It may look a lot better on-field, as many unis do. It's clean. I am so happy that they got rid of the side stripes on the jerseys. I am just thrilled that those old unis are gone. That is the BIG W of the day. While their new set isn't great, they moved on to something FAR better and I am okay with that, for now.
But no... I will not be buying a Patriots jersey. The streak continues. I haven't bought a Patriots jersey since the '90s. I thought the streak was going to end today. Instead, the Jaguars get my money for that beautiful Teal jersey. #20 Jalen Ramsey. On sale for $79.99, if you're interested.
