Ungrateful & Entiltied

I was going to talk about something else today, but I saw a comment that I keep seeing around "Patriots Nation" and it is quite annoying, but also, it isn't surprising. I was scrolling through twitter when I saw the Pats tease their reveal day for their updated unis. In the comments I saw this:

"Look I’m as big a pats fan as anyone, but I have to say thank god we got rid of Brady. I hated his attitude. I think we’ll be more successful when Bill gets to mentor a more athletic quarterback. Big things to come."

Now, this is probably baiting, someone needing attention. But it isn't the first time I have seen a comment like this. I have actually seen a bunch of them. Even under the said tweet, you have people commenting with similar feelings. Saying things like:

"Yo fr. His attitude towards his teammates AND the game were absolute shit last year. This train don't stop even for Tom."

Another person agreeing that Tom's attitude sucked saying they are "still a playoff team and Super Bowl contender as long as Bill is around". As I said, this isn't the first time I have seen comments like this. And not just on social media either. I live in the Boston area, I hear and see the things these buffoons say. I am on record saying that while the Patriots are my home town team and they hold a place in my heart... I absolutely can't stand Patriots "fans".

Brady was here for two decades. Anyone from the New England area who is in their 20's & 30's has been living in football heaven. They weren't fans before the constant losing. I remember when the Pats went from the white helmets to the silver. The "Flying Elvis" logo on the shoulders is what I grew up with. That is probably why those unis are so dear to me. Bledsoe was the man. I remember the first Patriots Super Bowl of my lifetime (the 2nd in franchise history, 1st in Super Bowl XX), Super Bowl XXI against the Packers. They lost 35-21. It wasn't until February of 2002 where the Pats actually hoisted their first Lombardi. The first of 6.

People like my grandfather who have been fans of the Pats even before they were demolished by the Bears in Super Bowl XX and have stayed loyal through the ups and downs, THEY are real fans. I've said it before, I believe at least 75% of Patriots "fans" will be gone after they miss the playoffs. They can't be associated with a losing team. That is what most of this generation is about. Bandwagon jumpers. These "fans" haven't even experienced the hard years. They have no clue what it is like to be the Browns. That is why I have such respect for those fans. They are SO damn loyal to their team no matter if they go 0-16. But like with any team, if they start winning, there will be a LARGE group of "lifelong fans" that come out the woodwork to try and feel special. The "Patriots Nation" is FILLED with those type of people.

These are the type of people who say stupid shit about Tom Brady. He helped get this team, this area, 6 (SIX!!!) Super Bowl Championships. 9 Conference Championships, many more Conference Championship appearances and a boatload of Division titles. He took pay cut after pay cut to do whatever it took to give the team the best chance to win. He was a leader ON and OFF the field. I always remember hearing James Harrison tell the story of when he joined the Patriots. He hated Tom Brady, couldn't stand him. Thought he was fake. When he met with him, worked with him, and being on that team during the time he was, he said "Believe me. I wanted to hate this dude with a passion. I get there, and I'm like, he's the ultimate teammate". So to see people talk about his bad "attitude" is just ridiculous to me.

A part of me feels like it's hurt fuels these comments. "He wants to leave us? Well, fuck him then!". That type a thing. I am sure that is one reason. Another reason is the buffoonery that is most of the Patriots fans. I can't stand being in a sports bar (or anywhere else for that matter) around many of these types of people for very long. Believe me when I tell you, almost all of them have no clue what the hell they are talking about when it comes to football. It annoys me to no end. I will be in the middle of a couple of them while they are talking about "the Pats" and I'll sit there listening while in my head ill be saying "wrong...", "that is way off...", "where the hell did he hear that from, wtf?...", "yeah... no", "where is the nearest exit?".

I hate to sound like a know it all, because I know I am far from that. But I have watched football all my life. I played football for half of it. I don't know EVERY single player. I don't know EVERY single stat. I am actually not that great with stats and all that, if I am being completely honest. I know A LOT about football (the actual game), about the actual teams, and about the NFL. But I don't pretend to know what I don't. My point is with all that I know, it is just so cringy to see these fans talk so confident but as soon as they start talking you can tell they are full of shit. A lot of the Patriots fan base is equivalent to a bunch of stoners claiming to be carpenters who can't even put together a dog house. They pretend they are experts but know little to nothing.

My personal favorite is the group of friends who follow everything the Alpha of the group says. The state of the football world forms and changes by the law of the Alpha, not by reality. Any challenge to the hivemind provided by the Alpha is subject to a chest to chest encounter with a face full of stank ass heavy breathing and shouting until you either knock the dude flat on his ass or just submit to his opinion. There is no arguing with these asshats.

Of course not all Patriots fans are like that. There are still a great ton of actual fans here. Good people with a great love for their team and the game. They understand how good it has been, appreciated it, and knew it was never going to stay that way forever. Hell, I am surprised it lasted as long as it did. I think that goes for the entire NFL. They love Brady, still, support him and apparently New England leads the sales of Tom Brady Bucs jerseys. Pretty cool I think. Those are the real fans! They will STILL be here when things get tough. They will endure the 8-8 seasons, the 9-7's and 4-12's. They will keep supporting this team until they rise up once more in the future and contend for a title. As far as the other "fans"... I don't know where they will go after the Chiefs stop winning.
