XFL 2021 & Beyond!

Earlier today I wrote an article "Where Do We Go From Here?". At the time all I knew was that the XFL said they were committed to the 2021 season, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. I am committed to being one of the best XFL & BIG3 journalists, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. I was very unsure if the XFL would make it's way back from this unavoidable problem the entire world is facing right now. Until I heard it straight from the XFL, I wasn't getting my hopes up. And then it happened.

"XFL Outsider" retweeted a "Jake Russell" (Washington Post Sports Writer) tweet that said one of League president and COO Jeffrey Pollack key points was:

"The 2021 season and seasons beyond are happening. No question whatsoever." "We will return. We will play in 2021. No doubt about that."

What a great feeling it was to read that. In a crazy world, this has been, everything seems grim. The work the XFL community who have put in a ton of work to support this league can rest a little easier now, knowing their work will continue with the XFL. Knowing we will get next season and "beyond" is awesome. I think we as a community and fan base showed them that XFL Spring Football can and will work. It has only been 5 weeks and look at what we have all done together. It is a great feeling to have right now. I am so glad this was said. Jake Russell also tweeted:

Also, even though the XFL knows the chance is small, the league hopes to resume the 2020 season at some point, whether it be regular season or playoffs. Their statement last night intentionally started with the word "Currently" and didn't use the word "cancel."

So... maybe in a 2 weeks or so, things could be looking a lot different. Maybe in 2 weeks people start thinking, okay, we got this under control for the most part, maybe we can get the playoff played. Maybe have all teams in, just to be fair, for the missed time. As current standings would go in the East: #1 DC Defenders vs #4 TB Vipers & #2 STL Battlehawks vs #3 NY Guardians. In the West: A crazy rematch between the #1 HOU Roughnecks and #4 SEA Dragons. Finally the #2 DAL Renegades vs #3 LA Wildcats. Winners move on. XFL Champion crowned. And we salvage the season.

That being said, it was reported that the XFL players were told they can sign with NFL teams if they were offered. This means if there was to be a chance to finish the season, how many players would still be there for their teams? As of right now, every tweet I have seen from an XFL player has had a "this is it, goodbye forever" type feel to it.

BJ Daniels, QB Seattle Dragons: An opportunity is all I’ve ever wanted! I thank God for what he has already done! #OnlyGod Thank you SEATTLE!
PJ Walker, QB Houston Roughnecks: Houston... this was an amazing experience. The fans was turnt up each week. @xfl2020 appreciate the Opportunity! @XFLRoughnecks #ForTheH
Jonathan Celestin, LB DC Defenders: Thank you @XFLDefenders for the chance to keep playing. I will forever be grateful. Thank You DC for the best fans!!

This is only a quick look at the tweets from XFL players. But I get the overall feeling that these are, as I said, "goodbye forever" messages. Not, "This was a great season that I wish we could have finished. Just wait until next year!", something along those lines. Now I know we could say that the players don't know anything, so they are just living in the moment. They don't know if the league will be back, or if they will be back even if the league is. It is quite disappointing still, just thinking about it. The XFL coming back without any of the star players we have grown to know and love will feel quite odd. But I guess only time will tell exactly what will happen. At least we got SOME good news out of the disaster this virus has brought down on all of us.
